Hidden Buffalo
Sky Running is looking for buffalo. All day
he has looked but he has seen none.
Sky Running and his Cree people have roamed
the prairie all summer, searching for the great buffalo
herds that will provide food for the coming winter. But
they find none, and they grow desperate with hunger. Sky
Running knows he is not old enough yet to ride with the
hunters, but he wants to help. He carefully scans the horizon
from the high hill his people call The Nose. He looks west
and south and east to the bright flash of Sounding Lake.
But nothing moves. Why have the plains hidden the great
herds? How will Sky Running and his people survive the winter?
In this lyrical coming-of-age story, Governor
General's Award-winner Rudy Wiebe captures the anxiety of
a boy who feels powerless to help his people, but who must
speak his dreams if they are to survive. Steeped in aboriginal
myth and lore, Hidden Buffalo is also the tale of how a
whole tribe can turn its gaze from the horizon to see to
the wisdom of a child.
Original paintings by noted Cree artist Michael
Lonechild capture the colorful palette of the prairie landscape
in autumn and the rich detail of Cree life in the late nineteenth
century.
