Across Time and Tundra is the definitive,
illustrated history of one of Canadas most interesting
and least-known Native people: the Inuvialuit, the Inuit
of the Mackenzie Delta. For hundreds of years they enjoyed
a rich and secure lifestyle, augmented by great annual hunts
of beluga and bowhead whales. All that changed with the
arrival of American whalers in the late 1800s. Decimated
by disease and cultural dislocation, the Inuvialuit have
successfully rebounded, signing a land claim in 1984.
A co-publication with the Canadian Museum
of Civilization, Across Time and Tundra features rare archival
photos and splendid works of art, and the text includes
traditional stories and remembrances of Inuvialuit elders.
